2D and 3D art by Ruairidh McLachlan

Online Museum Exploration

I worked on a game project involved with the development of the online presence for a museum. The game was designed to be a top down view of the museum featuring all of it’s rooms and exhibits. The player would talk to the volunteer characters by the entrance and be given questions related to the exhibits. This would have the player explore the environment and look at each of the exhibits to find the relevant information. The overall style of the project was pixel art focused, all of the character sprites had been designed to a 64×64 canvas so I was tasked with creating each of the exhibits in the museum in a similar style.

The museum layout has eight rooms in total as well as a shop/reception area ranging from military history to local wildlife. I have collected each of the assets I created into larger sprite sheets as an easier method to display them.

Featured above are the assets I developed for the game. They range from UI design elements to physical in game displays. In order to provide more context here are some screenshots from the project as it stands.

The style I needed to work in for this project is quite different from my own. Pixel art is something I have tried before but never on this scale. To produce this many assets took a while and I developed a few techniques for quickly creating effects like drop shadows or writing. Overall I am quite pleased with this body of work as it was an interesting challenge to work in a new art style.
