Today I wanted to create a creature to inhabit the shattered landscape of Aeryallon. This creature would need to be small and sturdy and well protected from the elements in order to survive. The stormling is exactly such a creature. Nimble and strong they are able to rapidly scramble across the landscape with surprising speed scavenging and stealing whatever they can. They’re remarkably intelligent creatures having their own forms of communication and being able to craft simple weapons, clothing and shelter given the right materials.
The initial sketch provided me with a basic sense of proportion as well as the major features of the design. I knew I wanted to create something similar to a goblin but design it to fit more comfortably into a harsher environment. The large eyes and nose allow the stormling to navigate through the landscape in all conditions using their excellent night vision and sense of smell, their fur is thick and waterproof effectively eliminating the major threats of exposure to the elements and their strong hands and feet combined with opposable thumbs allow them great manual dexterity for both climbing and working.
The proportions of the design changed quite a bit in the final drawing. I felt that making the limbs thicker would provide more of a sense of strength as well as implying the thickness of the fur. I also included more detail in the background to provide context for the creatures environment. This is the first unique creature I have created for this project and I am interested to see how I can build on it during the rest of it.
