2D and 3D art by Ruairidh McLachlan

University 2d Concept Development

My second year at university had me creating several pieces for a 2D module. In which we studied the design process, materials, texture, colour, lighting, composition and numerous other fundamentals of 2D design.

Our task was to create a Location, a Creature and a Vehicle from within a made up world. One of these final pieces was to be fully rendered with defined texture and lighting included.

The world I made to design my pieces around was one of magically floating islands drifting above the land, these islands were home to many people and creatures of various natures and magical capabilities.

The location I created was that of a school or university situated across two of these floating islands, this magnificent series of buildings is a place of learning, studying the world around them and devising the means to travel through it.

Speaking of which we come to my vehicle design. This vehicle is a one person wooden craft designed to utilise the air currents surrounding the islands to traverse from place to place through the use of it’s large, sail-like glider wings.

Finally my creature design. This creature is a gargantuan being of raw magical power, it’s nature is peaceful for the majority of the time but it’s sheer size and ability to influence the weather of the world around it make it a force to be reckoned with. Many inhabitants of the islands would regard this creature with deity-like awe and reverence as it’s influence over the weather patterns would determine the fate of crops and villages alike.

I was pleased with the result of my work an I very much look forward to working on similar tasks in the future.
